![]() ![]() ![]() This film flew mostly under the radar when it was released back in 2013, but recently showed up on the Dissolve’s list of “The 50 best films of the decade so far” in the forty-first slot. This movie certainly isn’t without its snags, some of the character motivations feel a bit flimsy, but the merit of it greatly outweighs these flaws. This intimate setting allows for the plot surrounding the comet and its effects on the group to bear that much more weight. Likewise, most of the actors are unknown, though fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will recognize Nicholas Brendon (Xander) who plays Mike. It was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, who has only one other writing credit to his name and that is for the animated Johnny Depp vehicle, Rango. It was shot in just few days, in one location, with a small cast and a lot of improvised lines. Though it isn’t found footage and leans much more towards science fiction, this film has a similar feel to the early Paranormal Activity films. When I describe Coherence as minimalist, that is no exaggeration. The panic only grows, and with it the cracks in the group become more apparent. As the night wears on, the story becomes more and more complicated and intense each time they leave the house. Once they pry it open, they discover a picture of each of them with random numbers written on the back. When the search party returns, shaken and carrying a lock box, they are not prepared for what's inside. They are able to get the generator running, but the power is now the least of their worries. Everyone laughs off Emily’s story as silly superstition, until weird things start happening.Īfter the comet passes, the power gets knocked out and a few of the men in the group volunteer to head down to another house in the neighborhood that still has lights on. She tells the story of a woman in the 1920’s who returned home after a comet passed only to find her husband waiting for, only he wasn’t her husband. While most everyone expresses lukewarm interest in the astrological anomaly, Emily sounds excited, maybe even concerned. As the guests trickle in and make small talk, the subject of conversation turns to the comet that is supposed to pass by Earth and be visible that night. Shot with a budget of about $50,000, the film opens, innocuously enough, with a group of friends gathering for a dinner party. She's most definitely alive.Minimalist to its core, Coherence proves that you don’t need a lot of flash to create an atmosphere of anxiety and existential dread. Soon as he talks to her on the phone, he realizes something is wrong. Initially he picks up the phone thinking someone's playing a joke. Kevin gets a call from that reality's Emily in the end. Other realities, well, that’s not part of this film. On answering theĬall, he gives a suspicious look towards Emily Prime and she staresīack with guilt. She wakes up the next morning on the sofa. Everyone seems normal which means no one knows of the two Emilys yet. The next morning the Emily from the bathtub is missing. The previous night she's attacked the Emily from that reality and put her in the bathtub. The Emily in the last scene is not from that reality. More info: Many-worlds interpretation and Director's interview. I did the analysis based on the movie, similar movies and quantum physics. To summarize, it means that she woke up in an alternate reality, one that the others didn't left the house, one that she only changes places. In front of her, that guy receives a call, and that was herself in the beginning of the movie, which moments later arrived at the house and was hit in the bathroom by her at the end. Then the guy gives her the ring that was left in the bathroom last night. She wakes up and walks outside and see the car glass broken. We see that she has two rings, one she has on, and the other that was in the bathroom that night before she fainted in the hall. The one she hides in the bathroom wakes up in yet another alternate reality. The one she put in the trunk of the car wakes up in another alternate reality. This is caused by a chain reaction she triggered by her and her actions. Another her also broke the car glass in other alternate realities. She also broke the car glass in one reality. In other alternate realities this repeats. In another reality she hits another her. ![]()
